What Is PVC Pipe?

PVC pipe is a plastic plumbing pipe made from polyvinyl chloride. It carries water, wastewater, and other fluids through residential and commercial systems. PVC pipe resists corrosion and has a smooth inside surface that supports steady flow. Plumbers join sections with fittings and solvent cement to form sealed pipe runs.

Key Takeaways About PVC Pipe

  • PVC pipe has a smooth, corrosion-resistant interior.
  • Fittings and solvent cement create sealed connections.
  • PVC pipe is not the same as PEX or ABS pipe.

How PVC Pipe Works

PVC pipe carries water or wastewater through a hollow plastic passage. Its smooth inner wall helps fluids move with less surface friction. Pipe size, fitting shape, and the planned flow path guide the layout.

Related glossary terms: ABS Pipe, Pipe Fitting, Sewer Lateral.

Plumbers cut PVC pipe to fit the planned run, then prepare the pipe and fitting surfaces. Solvent cement softens the joining surfaces and bonds them together as the connection sets. A sewer line replacement may also include cleanouts, bends, and transitions to other pipe materials.

Wye fittings can direct flow into a sewer line while keeping the path smoother than a sharp turn. ABS pipe is another plastic option, but the materials have different joining methods and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Expert Note

When we work on a sewer line replacement, we check the existing pipe, fittings, and connection points before planning the new run. We also check the pipe path and joints so the replacement connects properly to the rest of the drainage system.

PVC Pipe in Practice: A Real-World Example

A buried sewer line may need replacement after damaged sections cause repeated backups. The replacement can use PVC pipe with matching fittings, cleanouts, and connections to the remaining sewer line.
