What Is a Shutoff Valve?

A shutoff valve is a plumbing control that stops water flow through a pipe or fixture supply line. Turning the handle closes an internal gate, ball, or cartridge. This lets you isolate a toilet, faucet, water heater, or section of piping during a leak, repair, or replacement.

Key Takeaways About Shutoff Valve

  • A local valve controls flow to one fixture or pipe section.
  • Closing the valve limits water damage during a plumbing leak.
  • A shutoff valve is not the same as a check valve.

How Shutoff Valve Works

A shutoff valve controls water by moving an internal part across the pipe opening. A quarter-turn handle often operates a ball inside the body. A wheel handle may raise or lower a gate or stem.

Most fixture valves sit on the supply line below a sink, behind a toilet, or near a water heater. Closing the valve stops flow to that fixture while other plumbing may keep working. The main shutoff valve controls water entering the building.

How It Differs From Other Valves

A check valve helps prevent reverse flow, but it doesn't provide routine manual isolation. A pressure reducing valve manages water pressure, while a shutoff valve simply opens or stops flow.

Expert Note

When we check a shutoff valve, we look for leaks around the stem, body, and connected fittings. We also confirm that the handle moves properly and that the valve stops flow without leaving a slow drip. A seized or corroded valve may need careful handling during emergency plumbing repair.

Shutoff Valve in Practice: A Real-World Example

A leaking toilet supply line can keep releasing water after the toilet tank stops filling. Closing the nearby shutoff valve isolates the toilet and gives the repair team a controlled work area.
