What Is An Anode Rod?

An anode rod is a metal component inside many tank water heaters. The rod attracts corrosive activity in the tank water, so the tank lining and other metal parts face less damage. As the rod wears away, the water heater loses this layer of protection and may need a replacement rod.

Key Takeaways About Anode Rod

  • The rod wears away before the tank’s steel parts.
  • Its condition can affect water heater replacement decisions.
  • An anode rod isn’t the same as a heating element.

How Anode Rod Works

An anode rod uses a more reactive metal to draw corrosion away from the water heater tank. The rod gradually breaks down while the tank’s steel surfaces receive added protection. This process is called sacrificial protection.

A technician checks the rod through the tank’s service opening. The inspection looks at the remaining metal and the condition of the connection. A worn rod may support a water heater replacement plan, especially when the tank and other parts also show age.

Related Water Heater Parts

  • Tank lining separates stored water from the steel tank.
  • The heating element warms water in an electric tank heater.
  • A temperature and pressure relief valve helps control unsafe pressure and heat.

Expert Note

When we handle a water heater replacement, we check whether the existing anode rod is accessible and worn. We also look at the tank connection and surrounding parts, because corrosion can affect removal and installation work.

Anode Rod in Practice: A Real-World Example

During a water heater replacement, a technician may remove the old anode rod and inspect the tank opening. A heavily worn rod supports replacing the component with a compatible part during the installation.
