What Is Hard Water?

Hard Water is water that contains dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. These minerals can leave scale on fixtures, reduce soap lather, and create deposits inside plumbing and water heaters. Hard water is common in many homes and is different from dirty water because the minerals are dissolved and usually invisible.

Key Takeaways About Hard Water

  • Calcium and magnesium create water hardness.
  • Mineral deposits can build up on plumbing surfaces.
  • Hard water isn't the same as dirty water.

How Hard Water Works

Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium. The minerals travel through supply pipes and reach faucets, showers, appliances, and water heaters. They usually can't be seen while the water flows.

Minerals can settle when water heats or evaporates. The residue may form scale on an aerator, showerhead, or heating surface. Soap also reacts with the minerals, so it may leave a film on glass, tile, or skin.

A water test can show the level of hardness and help guide equipment selection. A water softener reduces hardness by exchanging calcium and magnesium for another ion. A filter may remove particles or certain substances, but it doesn't normally soften hard water.

Expert Note

When we inspect hard water, we look for scale on fixtures, supply connections, and water-heating equipment. We also review water test results before discussing a water softening equipment supplier option. Our team matches the equipment discussion to the home's plumbing layout and the condition causing the concern.

Hard Water in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner may notice white scale around a faucet and poor soap lather in the bathroom. We may check those signs and review a water test before discussing water softening equipment.
