What Is a Cleanout?

A cleanout is an accessible opening in a drain or sewer pipe. Its removable cap lets a plumber reach the inside of the line with cleaning equipment or an inspection camera. Cleanouts are placed at useful access points, such as near a building, at a pipe direction change, or along a buried sewer route.

How Cleanout Works

A cleanout gives a plumber a direct path into a drain or sewer line. The cap seals the pipe during normal use. A plumber removes the cap when the line needs cleaning or inspection.

During sewer line cleaning, equipment enters through the opening and moves through the pipe. The access point can help the plumber work toward a blockage or away from it. A camera may also pass through the cleanout to show pipe conditions, connections, or breaks.

Cleanouts may appear outdoors, in crawl spaces, near foundation walls, or inside service areas. Their location depends on the pipe layout and how the line connects to the public sewer.

Expert Note

When we handle sewer line cleaning, we locate the cleanout and check its cap before using the opening. We also watch for damaged threads, standing water, or limited access. Those details help us choose suitable cleaning equipment and protect the surrounding area.

Cleanout in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner notices slow drainage in several fixtures. We open the exterior cleanout, clear the sewer line from that access point, and check the flow afterward.
