What Is PEX Pipe?

PEX pipe is flexible plastic tubing used to carry hot and cold water through plumbing systems. Cross-linked polyethylene gives PEX pipe flexibility, resistance to corrosion, and simple routing around framing. Plumbers connect it with approved fittings, so it can serve supply lines in homes and many water line replacement projects.

  • PEX carries hot and cold water through supply lines.
  • PEX is not the same material as PVC pipe.

How PEX Pipe Works

PEX pipe carries pressurized water through a home’s supply system. Its flexible walls let installers make smooth turns and route tubing through tight spaces. The tubing comes in different sizes for different water flow needs.

Special fittings join PEX sections to valves, fixtures, and other pipe materials. Common connection methods include crimp, clamp, and press fittings. Each method needs the correct fitting and tool. A water line replacement may use PEX from an accessible connection point to a fixture or branch line.

How PEX Pipe Differs From Rigid Pipe

Rigid pipe needs more elbows to change direction. PEX can follow a curved path, which may reduce the number of connections in a water line. PEX also does not rust like metal pipe, but fittings still need careful installation and inspection.

Expert Note

When we work on water line replacement, we check the existing pipe, access points, and connection locations. We route PEX to limit sharp bends and protect each fitting from strain. Our team also checks the completed line for leaks before the work is finished.

PEX Pipe in Practice: A Real-World Example

A water line replacement may remove a damaged section beneath a sink and connect new PEX pipe to the existing supply line. The installer routes the tubing through the cabinet and secures fittings at the shutoff valve and faucet connections.
